Screw conveyors – the right transport systems to suit your needs
Screw conveyors are used wherever a variety of bulk materials have to be transported quickly and safely. Scheuch COMPONENTS offers a wide selection of variants, allowing you to find exactly the right conveyor to meet your specific requirements.
What is a screw conveyor?
A mechanical screw conveyor is a transport or conveying system that can be used for an extensive range of bulk materials. Screw conveyors are driven by a motor and operated according to the Archimedes screw principle. This means that the element being conveyed is moved by constantly rotating the screw shaft, which looks like a screw.
Since gravity creates friction between the conveyed material and the pipe walls, the material does not rotate with the spiral but is transported instead. To achieve the highest possible conveying rate, the friction on the screw thread should be significantly lower than that on the pipe or trough wall.
In addition to the rotating screw shaft, the screw conveyor consists of a screw thread, a drive unit, an inlet and outlet, and – depending on the design – a conveyor pipe or screw trough.
What are the special features of a screw conveyor?
In contrast to pneumatic suction systems, screw conveyors are usually less expensive, quieter and, most importantly, suitable for shorter distances. The conveying distance can be quite steep (up to 30 degrees difference in altitude), but should be kept as straight as possible.
Advantages of a screw conveyor:
- Dust-free and closed conveying process
- Specific seal design for the area of application
- Ideal drive dimensions
- Designed for 24/7 continuous operation
- Scheuch COMPONENTS provides screw conveyors up to 13 metres long
- Robust design for maximum loads in continuous operation
- Flexible system integration using 3D planning
- Short delivery times due to largely standardized modular design
What types of screw conveyors are available?
We currently offer three basic screw conveyor variants. These differ in structure as well as in key technical data and areas of application.
Are you interested in purchasing a screw conveyor for your business, but aren’t quite sure which variant is right for your needs? Then use the overview below to guide you and visit the corresponding detailed pages for more information on the individual designs:
Pipe screws conveyors: Particularly suitable for conveying on a steep incline
Trough screw conveyors: Easy to access and low-maintenance
Custom made screw conveyors: Customized production for special project requirements
Areas of application for screw conveyors
Screw conveyors are used in cases where bulk materials have to be transported. Examples of the main purposes for which screw conveyors are used include blocking, discharging, dosing and compressing material.
The conveyed material can be, granular, powdery or viscous and made of wood, metal or plastic, for example.
Which industries are screw conveyors suitable for?
Screw conveyors are suitable for businesses including agricultural operations, companies processing wood-based materials or metallic materials, recycling centres, chemical and pharmaceutical companies or operations in the animal feed industry.
Our standard screw conveyor designs with a diameter between 200 and 1,000 mm can achieve a throughput volume of 2 to 500 m³/h. Customized and special designs are adapted to your requirements.
Our screw conveyors are produced from high-quality materials, which means that they can be made of stainless, high-strength steels with resistance to attacks if this is suitable for the application. On request, we can also produce screw conveyors in accordance with the ATEX directive and with additional equipment tailored to suit your requirements.
